What is PDF Redactor?
PDF Redactor is a free browser-based tool that permanently removes sensitive information from PDF documents. Unlike simple black box overlays that can be removed, this tool actually deletes the underlying text data. It can automatically detect common PII patterns including Social Security numbers, email addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, and dates of birth.
Essential for lawyers, healthcare professionals, HR departments, and anyone who needs to share documents while protecting confidential information.
How does PDF Redactor work?
- 01 Upload your PDF by dragging it onto the upload area or clicking to browse
- 02 Click "Auto-Detect PII" to automatically find sensitive information (SSN, emails, phones, etc.)
- 03 Review detected items and check the ones you want to redact
- 04 Manually draw additional redaction boxes by clicking and dragging on the PDF
- 05 Click "Apply Redactions" to permanently remove selected information
- 06 Download the redacted PDF—sensitive data is completely removed
Why use a browser-based tool?
- HIPAA-safe: Documents with PHI never leave your device or get transmitted
- True redaction: Text is permanently deleted, not just covered with black boxes
- PII auto-detection: Finds SSN, email, phone, credit card, DOB patterns automatically
- Legal compliance: Creates court-ready redacted documents for FOIA, discovery, etc.
- No trace: Original sensitive text cannot be recovered from the redacted PDF
Common Questions
Is the redaction truly permanent?
Yes. Unlike some tools that just place black boxes over text (which can be removed), our redactor actually deletes the underlying text data from the PDF. The redacted information cannot be recovered, copied, or searched in the output file.
What types of PII can be auto-detected?
The auto-detect feature finds: Social Security numbers (XXX-XX-XXXX), email addresses, phone numbers (various formats), credit card numbers (16 digits), and dates of birth (MM/DD/YYYY, etc.). You can also manually redact any other sensitive content.
Is this tool HIPAA compliant?
Yes. Since all processing happens in your browser and files are never uploaded to any server, there's no data transmission risk. PHI (Protected Health Information) stays on your device, making this inherently HIPAA-safe for redacting medical records.
Can I redact images or scanned PDFs?
This tool works best with text-based PDFs. For scanned documents (image PDFs), the text isn't selectable, so auto-detection won't work. You can still manually draw redaction boxes over sensitive areas in scanned documents.
Will the redacted PDF be accepted in court?
Yes. Properly redacted PDFs where the underlying data is removed (not just hidden) are generally accepted for legal proceedings, FOIA requests, and discovery. Always verify specific requirements with legal counsel.
