What is AI Summary?
AI Summary is a free tool that condenses long documents and text into concise summaries. It supports multiple input methods: paste text directly, upload PDF/DOCX/TXT files, or fetch content from URLs. Choose from extractive summarization (100% local, no AI API needed) or AI-powered summaries using your own OpenAI or Claude API key.
Essential for students processing research papers, professionals reviewing reports, content creators repurposing articles, and anyone who needs to quickly understand long documents.

Common Questions
What is the difference between extractive and AI summarization?
Extractive summarization identifies and extracts the most important sentences from your text using TF-IDF algorithm. It runs 100% locally with no API calls. AI summarization (OpenAI/Claude) generates new sentences that capture the meaning, often producing more coherent summaries but requiring an API key and sending text to the AI provider.
Is my document data private?
Yes. In extractive mode, all processing happens in your browser - nothing is uploaded anywhere. In AI mode, text is sent only to your chosen AI provider (OpenAI or Claude) using your personal API key. We never see, store, or have access to your documents or API keys.
What file formats can I summarize?
PDF files (up to 50MB), Microsoft Word documents (.docx), and plain text files (.txt). For PDFs, we use pdf.js to extract text client-side. For DOCX, we parse the XML structure using JSZip. All extraction happens in your browser.
Can I summarize web pages?
Yes, enter any URL and we'll fetch and extract the main content. We use a CORS proxy to handle cross-origin requests. Note that some websites may block external fetching or have dynamic content that doesn't extract well.
How do I get an OpenAI or Claude API key?
For OpenAI: Visit platform.openai.com, create an account, go to API Keys, and create a new key. For Claude: Visit console.anthropic.com, create an account, and generate an API key. Both offer pay-as-you-go pricing with generous free tiers.
What does the Focus option do?
Focus guides the summarization toward specific content types. General extracts main points. Action Items prioritizes tasks and to-dos. Key Facts emphasizes data, statistics, and concrete information. This is especially useful for meeting notes, reports, and research papers.
